Hunters

I just finished watching this film called "The End Of The Line," a documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year, revealing the devastating impact of overfishing on our world's oceans.

As always, it personally angered me how man can be so wantonly abusive of our earth's natural resources, that some species are now nearly wiped out. How did this happen? Our seas comprise more than 70 percent of our earth's surface that it would be unthinkable for humans to deplete this virtually infinite food source. Wrong.

Since the beginning of time, man hunted for food. Cattle, swine and poultry were later domesticated and now because of our technological advancements, we are manipulating genetics for our food supply. Fish were once hunted with mere spears, then with nets. But now, with sonar-equipped boats and trawlers, everything that's swimming in our oceans has no escape.

We are hunters, we are at the top of the food chain. But our numbers have uncontrollably exploded and our numbers have not been managed well. A few of us who cram ourselves in the tight, dusty, concrete spaces of cities live it up, consuming every economic resource we think would satisfy our endless cravings, while majority scrounge for whatever they can take from the dry earth. I cannot imagine how we hunted everything to the brink of extinction yet we cannot feed every living soul on this planet. We have created this imbalance and it is taking its toll on our only home. How far our resources be able to sustain us is just a matter of time.

We are 6.8 billion strong. And now with all the technology available to us, imagine what each of us is capable of if we cannot control our mortal appetites. Like locusts we consume everything on our paths until there is no more. Unless...
